Capability is spreading quickly
The AI Index documents rapid improvement in model capability and falling inference costs. Those trends place powerful building blocks in the hands of more firms. A summariser, chatbot or document generator can still be useful, but the feature alone is unlikely to remain scarce.
Businesses should assume that visible functionality will be copied. Strategy therefore moves one layer deeper: how the product fits the customer’s work, what trusted information it accumulates and who is accountable when the standard path fails.
Five stronger forms of advantage
- Workflow depth: integration with the sequence, approvals and exceptions of real work.
- Proprietary context: permissioned data and institutional knowledge that improve relevance.
- Trust: a record of sound judgment, security and transparent limitations.
- Distribution: relationships and channels that reliably reach the right customer.
- Service: skilled people who interpret results and help customers act.
Build an ecosystem, not a feature
A defensible offer might combine a system of record, expert reviews, implementation, training, community and periodic benchmarking. Each element strengthens the others. Software captures structured information; advisers interpret it; customers learn from the community; repeated use improves the method.
A practical moat audit
List every reason a customer currently chooses you. Remove anything a competent competitor could reproduce in 30 days. The remaining items reveal the real moat—or the absence of one. Then invest in assets that compound: case knowledge, embedded workflows, measured outcomes, trusted partnerships and customer habits.
