Digital tasks are easier to reach
Work already expressed as text, images, code or structured data is directly accessible to current AI systems. Drafting, classification, retrieval and routine analysis can therefore change quickly. Work in an unpredictable physical environment requires sensing, mobility, dexterity, safety and adaptation—and often changes more slowly.
Exposure is not elimination
The World Economic Forum reports that employers expect substantial job transformation and place AI, big data and technological literacy among fast-growing skills. At the same time, human capabilities such as analytical thinking, resilience and leadership remain important. A task may be automated while the occupation is redesigned around responsibility and relationships.
The value moves to the edges
When a standard document becomes cheaper, the valuable work may be defining the issue, resolving ambiguity, checking facts, negotiating and accepting professional responsibility. In trades, diagnosis, customer trust and on-site improvisation may remain valuable even as quoting and administration become automated.
Run a task audit
Break each role into weekly activities. Score them for repetition, digital inputs, tolerance for error, physical variability and need for trust. Automate low-risk preparation first. Redesign the role so people spend more time on judgment, difficult exceptions and customer outcomes.
