Adoption is accelerating—but unevenly
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports accelerating business adoption of AI in 2024–25. OECD analysis nevertheless finds persistent barriers for smaller firms, including skills, finance, data availability and uncertainty about legal consequences. Buying licences does not resolve those barriers.
Start with operational friction
Select a workflow with visible volume and cost: enquiry triage, sales follow-up, document intake, invoice processing, internal knowledge or management reporting. Measure its current time, errors, delays and exceptions before introducing AI.
Build the bridge in layers
- Document the existing process and accountable owner.
- Prepare and classify the relevant data.
- Introduce AI for a bounded support task.
- Require human review at defined risk points.
- Measure results against the baseline.
- Expand only after reliability is demonstrated.
Governance is part of the product
The National AI Centre provides resources for responsible AI adoption. In practice, every implementation should define permitted data, access, record retention, review requirements, escalation and monitoring. A trustworthy system makes these controls visible to staff rather than hiding them in a policy document.
